Thanks, Helen, glad you found it helpful. It does seem strange to allow the opposition to ruff but that's great if you've managed to get it to work in your favour sometimes.

That's the problem! Best we can do is make the play we think is most likely to work.

Hi Heather, yes, you’re right. It was a ‘jump’ overcall because I jumped over 1S and instead bid 2S. Some people use those jump bids to show a weak hand. A little bit like a weak 2 opening. In our case yesterday we had the agreement that a jump overcall showed 12-15 points. I was a little lighter than that but I had a 7 card suit to make up for the point shortage.

Suit combinations are hard work at first, I know. And they can seem disconnected to the 'real' game somehow. There's no doubt in my mind that spending some time thinking about suit combos is one of the best things you can do for your game. Hard to believe, perhaps, but they're even kind of thrilling! Nutting through the right way to play a particular suit is awesome.

I just wish I could find a better way to talk about them. It always seems so dry when I discuss them on videos and I can sense that all around video land there are people drifting off to sleep every time the topic comes up.

Maybe I need a real pack of cards to display on the videos. Hmmm. Needs more thought.

Yeah, it's quite a head spin. As I was making the video I had it in my head that it might be hard to follow. I think I need to make a separate video just about the card combination and then see how it applies on hands that come up.

Oh, cool! That's a great title. I'm going to change it to 'Odds you win'. Haha!
